Nel 1965 Andy Warhol incontra i Velvet Underground al Café Bizarre nel Greenwich Village a New York. La band è appena stata licenziata: il loro spettacolo è ritenuto troppo volgare.
Ma questo è proprio ciò che piace all'artista, che coinvolgerà Lou Reed e soci nella sua Factory, assieme alla performer tedesca Nico.
I Velvet saranno i cantori di New York e delle metropoli americane in modo diretto e crudo, senza ometterne i problemi: emarginazione e droga.
