Scuderie, Sotterraneo, First floor, Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi
There are more than 300,000 volumes, 70,000 of which are for children and teenagers; all books are placed on open shelves in subject order. Every day new titles and books are added to the collection.
› contemporary fiction and literature
Contemporary fiction can be found in the Scuderie room in alphabetical order by author. In this section you can find books by authors whose works belong to the period after 1945. Original language and translated versions are available. In the Sotterraneo (Scuderie basement) there is a collection of Italian and foreign literature with classic works from all countries, literary criticisms, poetry and theatre texts.
In the Scuderie and Sotterraneo rooms you can find books on all subjects:
IT, philosophy and psychology, religion, social sciences, law, economics, languages, natural sciences and applied sciences, technology, art, fashion, interior design, photography, music, sport, entertainment and history. On the First floor you can find all the materials about Bologna and its surrounding area, travel and cinema, television and theatre.
› foreign language books
Books are available in English, French, Spanish, German and Hebrew. There are special sections in Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Polish, Urdu, Albanian, Romanian, Bengali, Urdu and Japanese.
› Bologna e dintorni
This section is on the First floor. The local collection is dedicated to the history, culture, society and institutions of Bologna and its territory with a focus on the twentieth century and contemporary society.
› newspapers and magazines
On the First floor you can find more than 30 newspapers, Italian and foreign, also available in digital format on MediaLibraryOnLine, as well as weekly magazines on culture, politics and current affairs.
In addition, there are more than 300 magazines: literature, comics, art, travel, architecture, design, music, cinema, computing, cookery and sport. The latest issues can be found in the room. Back numbers can be requested to be consulted at the information desk located on the First floor (last request to be made at 6.45pm).

In the Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi you can find illustrated books for young children, short stories, books made of cardboard, books of different shapes and game books. For older children you can find novels, poetry, fairy tales and educational books. In addition, there are more than 5000 books in 50 foreign languages.

Newspapers, comics, magazines on music, art, youth travel, sport, computing, geography and leisure are available in the Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi. Magazines can be borrowed except for the latest number.

› in the catalogues In the two catalogues Biblioteca Salaborsa and Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi you can find what is available in the library collection (books, CDs, DVDs, CDROMs, newspapers, magazines, maps, etc.), discover where the documents are, whether they are available or not and their due date. You can access the catalogues directly from the library web pages as well as from the computers located inside the library.
› on the shelves The books are placed on open shelves according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system (DDC) used in many libraries worldwide. The DDC system organises human knowledge in ten main classes numbered from 000 to 900; these are divided into sets of subclasses for each subject.

Contemporary fiction is ordered alphabetically by author like the DVDs and music CDs, which are also divided by genre. Audiobooks are ordered according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Reference materials that cannot be borrowed are marked with a red label.
› on the shelves for children and teenagers In the Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi children's books are divided into themes: first books, fears, religions and holidays, food and health, nature, family, machines and trades, numbers and letters. Fiction books for youngsters are in alphabetical order by author with an indication of the type of book (detective, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, historical, humour, stories of youngsters); the educational books are ordered according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
First floor, Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi
The collection offers DVDs, music CDs and audiobooks: all new DVDs cannot be taken out in respect of the copyright law, but they can be watched on site.
More than 18,000 DVDs are available including films, documentaries and much more; you can borrow them on the First floor.
› cinema and theatre
The DVD collection offers a representative selection of cinema history including films by the main directors, cinema productions from different countries with particular attention to contemporary and auteur films. The collection also includes tv series and cartoons and soundtracks on CD. Theatre videos and DVDs include Italian and foreign theatre works, classic and contemporary works, musicals, cabaret, ballet and opera music.
The collection includes videos on Bologna and its territory; in addition there are documentaries on science, nature, art, entertainment, tourism and travel, sport, history and spirituality.
Around 1,000 latest releases can be watched on the First floor. It is necessary to reserve a pc, either in person or calling 051 219 4400 (Monday through Friday 9.00 am - 1 pm).

Cartoons, films and documentaries: in the Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi you can watch all the videos for consultation only. You can reserve them either in person or by calling 051.2194427. This service is only for children under 16.
There are more than 22,000 CDs including Italian and foreign music, jazz and classical music. The collection also includes operas, operettas, musicals, soundtracks as well as rock, blues, rap, new age and world music. The CDs are in the Sotterraneo and can be borrowed by adults and youngsters.

In the library you can find information for your job, professional growth, studies and leisure. You can choose the most suitable and reliable source: librarians constantly update and select the research tools available in every room.

In the Scuderie and Sotterraneo rooms you can find general encyclopaedias and encyclopaedias on specific subjects, technical dictionaries and vocabularies, catalogues, indexes and yearbooks. Atlases and maps - in particular of Bologna and the surrounding area - are available on the First floor.
The library has collections of laws and sentences updated in real time, full text archives of newspapers and weekly magazines, indexes of national and international magazines, biographical and statistical guidebooks, and catalogues of companies, universities and cultural institutes.

Books, videos, music CDs, audiobooks, CDROMs: a wide selection of documents is available on loan in Biblioteca Salaborsa and in the Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi. The service is only available for library members and is free of charge.
Both in Biblioteca Salaborsa and in Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi you can borrow up to 10 items.
› respect the due date!
You can borrow books for 30 days, CDs and DVDs for 7 days. Renewals are possible only for books and allow a 15 days extension of the loan. They can be requested in person, by calling the information service (051 2194426 Monday through Friday 9am - 1pm) or through your personal space available on the library catalogue. Renewals of books other members have place a hold on which are not possible.
› reservations and suggestions
You can reserve up to two books if they are out on loan and you can suggest the purchase of books, music CDs, DVDs, CDROMs and magazines. All the suggestions must be approved by librarians.
› inter-library loan
The library offers an inter-library loan service and document delivery service so you can consult or loan works which are not available in the library but are available in other institutions outside Bologna.

The library organizes meetings, conferences, readings, guided tours and much more. In particular, Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi invites children, youngsters, parents, classes and teachers to take part in meetings with writers and illustrators along with events to guide you through the different literary genres and book readings. The library's website is constantly updated with all the news and events.
This is entirely dedicated to children, teenagers and youngsters and shows the activities available, gives reading suggestions and guidelines on library usage. In addition, Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi, in cooperation with other partners, actively promotes initiatives to spread reading and the pleasure of growing up reading, such as Nati per leggere project, which is dedicated to children aged 0 to 6 and the Xanadu project, which promotes reading among teenagers.

Internet Area, Biblioteca Salaborsa Ragazzi
You can have free access to the Internet and navigate, send e-mails, use writing and calculation programs free of charge. A personal password is necessary and have to be requested at the inscription point in Piazza coperta.

There are 9 computers with access to the Internet for children up to the age of 16, who must be accompanied by one parent in order to get the password.
Access to the library is free. To take advantage of certain services it is necessary to register and show the membership card.

Almost all areas of the library are accessible. The library is in a historical building so at times an indirect access route could be necessary.
› joining the library
Registration is open to people who permanently or temporarily live in Italy. Under 18s willing to get a library card must have their parent's or guardian's written authorization and provide a photocopy of a valid photo ID of who signs the authorization.
› rules of good conduct
Take good care of your membership card, remember your password, respect the due date, and do not damage library documents. Do not eat, drink, use your mobile phone or introduce animals in the rooms. Please place any material you have used on the trolleys. Users must behave in an appropriate manner in the library and should avoid any disturbance or offence to the library staff and other users, respecting their needs. Any infringement of any of the above mentioned rules may lead to disciplinary action, including a suspension from all the library services for a period which will be notified by the board of direction.
